A five step playbook, worked through with Lucira Jewelry

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a simple question today: “What are the best lab grown diamond brands in India?”

You will not get a list of ten blue links. You will get a short, confident answer naming four to eight brands, with one line on why each one belongs on the list. For a category where the average customer spends three to eight weeks researching before spending anywhere from ₹40,000 to ₹4,00,000, that answer is now the single most valuable piece of real estate in the funnel.

Here is the part most jewellery founders miss. The assistant did not pick those brands by crawling their homepages. It picked them because a handful of third party listicles, roundups and comparison articles said those names first, said them consistently, and said them in a format the model could lift cleanly.

That is what Answer Engine Optimisation actually is for a consumer jewellery brand. Not schema tricks. Not stuffing “best lab grown diamond brand” into your footer. It is engineering your presence inside the sources the answer engines already trust.

This guide breaks that into five steps. To keep it concrete rather than theoretical, we will run a fictionalised worked example throughout using Lucira Jewelry, a lab grown diamond brand in the classic position: good product, IGI certified stones, clean website, near zero visibility inside AI answers. Every number in the Lucira example is illustrative and meant to show the shape of the work, not to report real results.

Why listicles, and why now

Answer engines do not think in pages. They think in consensus.

When a model assembles an answer to a commercial question, it is effectively asking three things:

  • Which sources discuss this question directly and in a structured way?
  • Which brand names appear repeatedly across independent sources?
  • What is the shortest defensible sentence I can write about each name?

Listicles satisfy all three at once. A piece titled “10 Best Lab Grown Diamond Brands in India in 2026” is already structured as a list of entities with justification attached to each entity. It is the closest thing on the internet to a pre chewed answer. That is why roundups, comparison posts, “best of” guides and editorial gift edits punch so far above their traffic weight in AI citations.

Two consequences follow, and both are uncomfortable for brands used to classic SEO.

First, your own content cannot get you there alone. You can write the best lab grown diamond buying guide on the internet, and an answer engine will still hesitate to cite you as evidence that you are among the best brands. Self assertion is weak evidence. Third party assertion is strong evidence.

Second, brand mentions matter more than backlinks. An unlinked mention of “Lucira” inside a well regarded editorial roundup can influence an AI answer more than a dofollow link buried in a low quality directory. The unit of currency has shifted from link equity to entity association.

The lab grown diamond problem specifically

Lab grown diamonds are a uniquely difficult category to win in AI answers, for reasons worth naming honestly.

  • Everyone says the same six things. IGI certified. Same chemical composition as mined. 30 to 40 percent of the price. Ethically sourced. Conflict free. BIS hallmarked gold settings. When every brand’s copy is interchangeable, a model has nothing to differentiate on, so it defaults to whichever names appear most often elsewhere.
  • There is an active trust deficit. Buyers arrive with real doubt: resale value, certification credibility, whether the stone is truly what it claims. Answer engines are conservative on high risk purchases and lean heavily toward sources that read as editorial or expert rather than promotional.
  • The category is young and the list is short. In most markets, the same eight to twelve brand names circulate through every roundup. That is bad news if you are outside the set and very good news if you can get in, because the set is small enough to influence.
  • Query intent splits sharply. “Are lab grown diamonds a good investment” is a doubt query. “Best lab grown diamond brands in India” is a shortlist query. “Lab grown solitaire under 1 lakh” is a purchase query. Each pulls from a different source pool, and most brands optimise for none of them.

Now the five steps.

Step 1: Nail down positioning

Everything downstream fails without this. If a model cannot summarise your brand in one clean clause, it will leave you out of the list, because a list entry without a differentiator is dead weight in an answer.

The test is brutally simple. Complete this sentence in twelve words or fewer, without using the words ethical, sustainable, affordable, luxury or brilliant:

Lucira is the lab grown diamond brand for ______.

If the blank can be filled by any of your competitors, you do not have positioning. You have category description.

Applied to Lucira Jewelry. Suppose Lucira’s real strength, visible in its order data, is not price and not ethics. It is that roughly seven in ten orders are custom or semi custom solitaire engagement rings in the ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 band, with in house design consultation and a fourteen day turnaround. That is a position. Written for an answer engine it becomes:

Lucira Jewelry is an Indian lab grown diamond brand specialising in custom IGI certified solitaire engagement rings, with design consultation and a fourteen day made to order turnaround.

That sentence is now the asset. It should appear, close to verbatim, in your About page, your founder’s LinkedIn bio, your press kit, your Google Business Profile, your Instagram bio, every pitch email and every publication brief. Repetition across independent sources is exactly how an entity becomes legible to a model.

Checklist for this step

  • One positioning sentence, under twenty five words, with a specific and verifiable claim inside it
  • Three proof points a journalist could confirm without your help, for example certification body, number of orders shipped, turnaround, warranty or buyback terms
  • One category you can plausibly be top three in, not top twenty. Narrow beats broad here.
  • Consistent brand name spelling everywhere. “Lucira”, “Lucira Jewelry” and “Lucira Jewels” used interchangeably splits your entity and dilutes every mention you earn.

Step 2: Identify your most important keywords

In AEO the unit is not a keyword. It is a prompt. People do not type “lab grown diamond brands India” into an assistant. They type “I’m getting engaged in March, budget around 1.5 lakh, should I go lab grown and which brands are actually trustworthy?”

So build a prompt set, not a keyword list. For a lab grown diamond brand it clusters into five groups.

Cluster 1: Shortlist prompts. These decide who gets named. Best lab grown diamond brands in India. Most trusted lab grown diamond jewellery brands. Top lab grown diamond brands for engagement rings. Best lab grown diamond brands in Mumbai and Delhi.

Cluster 2: Doubt prompts. These decide whether the category gets bought at all. Are lab grown diamonds worth buying. Do lab grown diamonds have resale value. Is IGI certification reliable for lab grown. Will lab grown diamonds lose value in ten years. Can a jeweller tell the difference.

Cluster 3: Comparison prompts. Lab grown vs natural diamond. Lucira vs [competitor]. Lab grown diamond vs moissanite. CVD vs HPHT which is better.

Cluster 4: Purchase and spec prompts. Best 1 carat lab grown solitaire under 1 lakh. Lab grown diamond engagement ring with 14k vs 18k gold. Best cut and colour grade for a lab grown solitaire. Lab grown diamond tennis bracelet price in India.

Cluster 5: Occasion and gifting prompts. Anniversary gift for wife under 1 lakh. Engagement ring shopping timeline India. Diamond jewellery gifts for a first anniversary.

Applied to Lucira. Given the positioning locked in step one, Lucira should not chase Cluster 1 broadly on day one. The realistic winnable set is the intersection of Clusters 1 and 4 around custom engagement rings: best brands for custom lab grown engagement rings in India, where to get a custom solitaire made India, lab grown solitaire under 1.5 lakh. Ten to fifteen prompts, not two hundred. Depth of association on a narrow set beats thin presence across a wide one, because models reward repeated co occurrence of brand and topic.

Prioritise each prompt on three axes: monthly demand, closeness to purchase, and how contested the current answer is. A prompt with modest volume, high purchase intent and a weak or inconsistent current answer is the single best target in AEO.

Step 3: Find which listicles are already getting cited

This is the research step almost nobody does properly, and it is where the leverage sits.

The method is manual, unglamorous and takes about a day.

  1. Take your prioritised prompt list from step two.
  2. Run every prompt across ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Run each one twice, in a fresh session, because answers vary between runs.
  3. Log, in a spreadsheet, every source cited: URL, publication, article title, publish date, last updated date, and which brands were named in it.
  4. Also log the answer itself. Which brands appeared, in what order, and what single line justification the model attached to each one.

What comes out of this is your target list, and it usually surprises people. It is rarely the biggest publications. It tends to be a mix of four types:

  • Editorial roundups from lifestyle and fashion titles, often updated annually
  • Category specialist blogs and comparison sites that review jewellery brands for a living
  • Marketplace and aggregator pages with structured brand comparisons
  • Community threads and forums, especially where real buyers discuss certification and resale honestly

Applied to Lucira. Say the audit returns twenty two unique cited URLs across the fifteen priority prompts. The pattern that typically emerges looks like this: five publications account for the majority of citations, three of them have not been updated in over a year, and Lucira appears in exactly one, at position nine of ten, described only as “another Indian option”. Two competitors appear in eleven of the twenty two.

That diagnosis is worth more than any keyword report, because it converts an abstract goal into a list of about eight specific articles and eight specific editors. Note also which brands are named in the answers but are not in any cited source. Those brands are being recalled from training data rather than retrieved live, which tells you something about their long term brand strength that no traffic tool will.

Step 4: Reach out to those publications

Now you have the list. The outreach itself is where most brands undo the previous three steps, usually by sending a press release.

Three motions work, in rough order of effort.

Motion one: the update pitch. The highest yield play in AEO. Find a cited listicle that is stale. Email the editor with something genuinely useful: two brands on the list have shut down or changed pricing, the article is dated 2024, and here is a corrected and expanded version of the section including a short entry on your brand. You are offering to improve their page, not asking for a favour. Refreshed pages get recrawled, and recrawled pages are more likely to be retrieved.

Motion two: the expert contribution. Publications covering lab grown diamonds need a quotable source who can explain CVD versus HPHT, or why IGI grading for lab grown is not directly comparable to GIA grading for mined stones. Offer your founder or gemmologist as that source. An expert quote embeds your brand name inside an authoritative context, which is exactly the association pattern models pick up.

Motion three: the original data play. This is the one that compounds. Publish something only you can publish. Anonymised order data on average carat size by city. Year over year shift in your ratio of lab grown to mined enquiries. Average customer research window before purchase. Original data gets cited, cited pages get retrieved, and your brand name travels with the statistic permanently.

Applied to Lucira. A realistic quarter looks like this. Eight target publications identified in step three. Motion one aimed at the four stale roundups, with a prepared 60 word brand entry and two product images attached so the editor’s work is close to zero. Motion two offered to the two specialist blogs, with the founder available for a fifteen minute call on custom design and turnaround. Motion three built once: an India Engagement Ring Report using Lucira’s own order data across twelve months. Expected conversion on cold editorial outreach of this quality is roughly one in four to one in six, which is why eight targets is the floor, not the ceiling.

Rules that make the difference

  • Personalise on the article, never on the publication. Reference the specific line you want changed.
  • Give them the finished asset. Copy, images, links, the exact sentence you would like used.
  • Never ask for a link. Ask for an accurate mention. The mention is what you actually need.
  • Follow up once, after seven days, then stop.
  • Keep paid placements clearly separate in your tracking. They work, but they behave differently and you should know which is which.

Step 5: Track what is holding and what is new

AEO visibility is not a ranking. It is a probability, and it drifts. A brand that appears in nine of ten runs this month can appear in four of ten next month because a single cited article was updated.

So tracking has to be recurring, not one off.

What to measure monthly

  • Presence rate. For each priority prompt, across each engine, how many runs out of ten name your brand. This is your core metric.
  • Position and framing. Where in the list you appear, and what descriptor is attached. Moving from “another option” to “known for custom engagement rings” is a real win even with no position change.
  • Citation set drift. Which sources are being pulled now versus last month. New entrants to that set are your next outreach targets.
  • Competitor share of voice. Which brands appear alongside you, and how consistently.
  • Assisted outcomes. Direct and branded search traffic, referral sessions from cited publications, and self reported attribution at checkout. Add a “How did you hear about us?” field, because AI referrals frequently arrive as direct traffic and are otherwise invisible in GA4.

Be honest about the limits of measurement here. AI assistant referrals are poorly attributed by every analytics stack today, so treat presence rate as your leading indicator and branded demand as your lagging one. Anyone promising precise revenue attribution from AI answers is overselling.

Applied to Lucira. A simple monthly sheet: fifteen prompts as rows, four engines as columns, presence rate in each cell, plus a second tab logging every citation URL seen. Reviewed on the first Monday of each month. Any prompt that drops more than 20 percentage points triggers a check of whether a cited source changed. Any new URL entering the citation set gets added to the outreach pipeline that week.

The foundation layer your own site still needs

Steps one to five are the offsite engine. They will underperform if your own domain is not quotable, because once a model has your name from a listicle it goes looking for corroboration.

  • Answer first content blocks. Open every guide with a direct forty to sixty word answer before any narrative. Models lift these almost verbatim.
  • Real FAQ sections on product and category pages, written in the exact phrasing customers use, with FAQ schema applied.
  • Entity clarity. An About page that states plainly who founded the brand, when, where it operates, what it sells, and what certifications it holds. Add Organization schema, Product schema with certification attributes, and consistent NAP details.
  • Comparison pages you actually control. Lab grown vs natural. CVD vs HPHT. Your brand vs the obvious alternative, written fairly enough to be credible.
  • Visible proof. Certificate lookup, buyback and warranty terms, real reviews with dates. Trust signals are disproportionately weighted for high value purchases.
  • Authorship. Named authors with credentials beat anonymous brand posts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this take to show results?

Positioning and prompt research take two to three weeks. Outreach placements typically land in weeks four to twelve. Measurable movement in presence rate usually appears in month two or three. This is a compounding channel, not a performance channel.

Do we still need traditional SEO?

Yes. Answer engines retrieve heavily from pages that already rank. Traditional SEO is now the qualifying round rather than the final.

Is this different from PR? I

t overlaps but the target selection is completely different. PR chases reach. AEO chases citation frequency, which often means pitching a niche specialist blog over a national daily because the specialist blog is what actually gets retrieved.

Can we pay to be included in these listicles?

Sometimes, and it can work. Track paid placements separately, prefer publications with genuine editorial standards, and do not let paid inclusion replace earned mentions, because concentration in paid only sources is fragile.

What if our brand is brand new?

Start with steps one and two, then aim step four entirely at motion three, original data and founder expertise. New brands have no authority to trade on, so they have to trade on being useful.
